From the plane, Bali does exactly what it promised. Terraces stacked down a hillside, a white rim of surf, volcanoes going blue in the distance. Then the doors open at Ngurah Rai airport and the first thing you meet is a car park.

Nobody lands here thinking about air. That is the whole trick of the place. The pictures sold you something you assumed came free with it.

So here is the number nobody puts in the brochure.

Across the whole island, Bali's air carried about 12.4 micrograms of fine particles per cubic metre in 2024. That is roughly two and a half times the World Health Organization's guideline of 5. It is comfortably inside Indonesia's own legal limit of 15. And it is dirtier than London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam and New York.

Read that last line again, because it is the part that tends to stop people.

What does 12.4 actually mean?

Fine particles, written PM2.5, are the specks of soot and smoke small enough to stay in the air instead of falling out of it. Engines make them. Fires make them. Cigarettes make them. They are what a hazy afternoon is actually made of, and they are measured in micrograms per cubic metre of air.

On its own the number means nothing to anyone. It only becomes real next to somewhere you have stood.

So we took the same global dataset, the same year, and the same method, and pulled the cities that people fly to Bali from.

Bali sits between Barcelona and Los Angeles, cleaner than every large Indonesian city and dirtier than every city that sends it visitors from Europe or Australia.

Australians are the single largest group arriving in Bali, just under a quarter of all foreign visitors last year. Most of them come from air at around 6.

Which means the average Australian landing at Ngurah Rai roughly doubles what they breathe, on the day they arrive, in the place they picked because it looked cleaner.

The reverse deserves saying just as plainly. If you came from Jakarta, Bali is a third of what you left behind, and that relief you feel getting off the plane is real and it is measurable. From Delhi, this island is seven times cleaner. For a lot of people in this region, Bali genuinely is the fresh air, and it deserves the credit.

But an island of rice fields and beaches now sits level with Tokyo, with Singapore, and with Los Angeles.

Why does an island measure like a city?

Three things do most of the work, and none of them are mysterious.

The first is engines. As of October 2024, national traffic police records put about 1.47 million motorbikes in Denpasar alone, plus another 290,000 cars, buses and trucks. Badung, which holds Canggu, Seminyak and the airport, carried close to another million vehicles. That is roughly 2.7 million exhausts on a strip of land you can drive across in an afternoon, and almost all of them are pointed at the same few roads at the same few hours.

The second is fire. Bali produces around 3,400 tonnes of rubbish a day, about 1.2 million tonnes a year, and a large share of it never reaches a facility. Across Indonesia, just under half of households say they burn their waste, one of the highest rates measured anywhere, and it is against the law. In villages it runs higher still. At the last national village survey, 70.5 percent got rid of household waste by burning it or putting it in a hole, because for a long time that was the only way rubbish disappeared. That smell down the lane at six in the evening is the second half of the number.

The third is that more people keep arriving. Bali recorded about 6.95 million foreign visitors in 2025, a record, up nearly ten percent in a year.

Here is the honest part, and it cuts against the easy story. Bali's island average has not climbed steadily. It was around 11 in 2000 and it is 12.4 now, moving up and down from year to year with no clear trend. Jakarta went from about 26 to 39 over the same stretch. So Bali has not tipped. Everything that would tip it is still growing, and nothing on this island is currently set up to notice if it does.

Sorted together, not one place in Bali falls below London, New York or any Australian city. Canggu, the highest, sits just under Makassar.

One more thing about the numbers above, said plainly. They are for 2024, which is the most recent full year anyone has published for Bali. Since then the vehicles, the arrivals and the rubbish have all kept climbing. Indonesia's national average actually edged down between 2024 and 2025. Whether Bali went up, down or nowhere in that time, nobody can say, because nobody measured it.

How much does the air change across the island?

The island average hides something more useful, which is that Bali is not one air. It is several, and they sit surprisingly close together.

Along the south coast the same dataset shows a straight slide from the traffic to the ocean.

The south coast loses about a third of its fine particles between Canggu and the Uluwatu cliffs.

Uluwatu is the cleanest reading anywhere we looked.

Canggu is roughly two and a half times Sydney. Uluwatu is more than one and a half. So the cleanest corner of this island is still dirtier than any major Australian city, and the gap between the two ends of one coastline is wider than the gap between London and Bali.

Anyone who rides here already knows the shape of this without a dataset.

Denpasar, Canggu, Seminyak, and now the whole run out to Uluwatu, are the stretches where the air has weight to it. You can taste the road. It sits on your clothes and it comes home with you.

Uluwatu is the one that has changed fastest. The building boom moved down to the Bukit and it has not slowed, and the cliff road that used to be quiet now carries construction trucks all day. That corner still holds the cleanest number on the island. It is also the corner filling up quickest.

Turn inland instead and about fifteen minutes out of Canggu the traffic thins, the green closes over the road, and the air goes cool and clean before the turn is finished. Get down to the beach or the cliffs at Uluwatu and the wind comes straight off open ocean and everything resets. North Bali and the mountains are not the same island at all.

Fifteen minutes. That is the whole gap between the Bali on your feed and the Bali on your shirt, and it is the most encouraging fact in this article.

Why the average misses what you actually breathe

Every air quality number above is an average across a square kilometre and a year. You do not breathe a square kilometre. You breathe a chair, a road, an hour.

A review published in 2024, pulling together thirteen separate studies, measured fine particles in outdoor areas where people smoke. It found readings up to 91. In comparable outdoor spots with nobody smoking, 4 to 20.

Ninety one is seven times this island's average and fifteen times Sydney's. So the gap between one table and another table on the same terrace can be wider than the gap between Bali and Delhi.

That is the part no average will ever show you, and it is the part you can actually smell.

Indonesia actually runs two separate government air networks. The weather agency, BMKG, has a national network of fine particle monitors, updated hourly, built mainly to watch forest-fire smoke. On the day this was updated it listed around thirty stations. Malang, Semarang, Medan, Pekanbaru, Palembang, Jambi, Pontianak, Samarinda, and more. Not one of them is in Bali.

The environment ministry runs the other one, the official index you see quoted as ISPU. On 31 July 2026 it listed 113 stations across the country. One of them is in Bali.

One. It sits at the Badung regency government complex on Jalan Raya Sempidi in Mengwi, inland, away from the coast and away from the quiet green further north. That single reading stands in for an island of about four and a half million residents and almost seven million visitors a year.

Anyone who lives in Mengwi can tell you the air there is not one thing. It thickens toward the Canggu traffic and clears as you go north, inside a single sub-district. If one village cannot be summed up by one number, an island cannot either.

The apps in your pocket fill the rest with small private sensors, and they do not agree with each other. On one July morning in 2026, one company's page gave the same city two readings at the same moment, one clean and one several times higher, while a spot down the coast read close to zero.

Almost seven million people flew here last year. Every wide figure in this article is a satellite estimate or a study finished years ago, because on the ground the whole island comes down to one government sensor at a government office and a handful of private ones that disagree. No café here has been measured. No road here has been measured. None of the fifteen minutes described above has ever been put on an instrument.

The paradise is still here. One sensor at a government office is measuring how long.

Method note on the comparison. The Bali island figure of 12.4 is taken from the fine 0.01 degree grid across 12,083 land cells. The city figures are taken from the coarse 0.1 degree grid. Run through the same coarse grid the cities use, Bali reads 12.1, so the comparison holds on either grid. City values are also stable regardless of averaging radius, with London reading between 8.55 and 8.62 across one, nine and twenty five cells. Cross-checks against ground data agree: the Greater London Authority reports central London roadside PM2.5 at 10 in 2023 with background sites lower, New York City reports a citywide average in the 6 to 8 range and meets the US standard of 9.0, and filter sampling in Denpasar from 2012 to 2017 came out at 13, above the satellite figure for Bali rather than below it.
